About us
Our history...
Following the introduction of the first PMR446 radios in 1999, the public and business users were able to access high quality, licence-free radio communications.
With 12 years experience in the radio communication industry our Managing Director spotted an opportunity and, initially working from an office in his garage, created Outerzone Limited in early 2000.
Our first product was the @ctive two-way radio. A very compact two-way radio, sold as a pair with everything all in one box - radios, desk chargers and batteries. It may seem strange, but this was unique at the time.
As our sales channels developed we launched a range of new radio models, all targeting the licence-free sector and with some unique innovations - an ultra-slim credit card sized radio and a wrist worn 'watch style' radio were among our memorable 'firsts'.
Since there were relatively few radio manufacturers at the time we rebranded the business to reflect our close association with our manufacturer partner.
Things went well, although many large, low cost manufacturers introduced licence-free radios and they became commonplace in high street electrical and catalogue stores. Inevitably this drove down the price, making it difficult for a small organisation to deliver the support that we wanted to give and deliver a competitive product.
As a result of falling sales in the consumer PMR446 sector, our supplier decided to focus on CB radio. However, we really didn't have a desire to move into this market.
As a result, our MD took the strategic decision to develop a new business radio brand over which Ingenso Limited (as we were now known) had complete control. By outsouring manufacturing, we could ensure that our products delivered the features we wanted and delivered great value. And so, the Opus two-way radio brand was born.
Fast forward over two decades and here we are today.
The Opus brand has grown considerably and now includes 10 different models. We still have a PMR446 licence-free model, but we are really focussed on our digital business radios.
We've also built relationships with other manufacturers, enhanced our skills and expanded our portfolio to include all the UK's leading two-way radio brands, including Motorola, Hytera, Kenwood, Icom and Entel.
This broad portfolio means that when a customer approaches us with a problem we are able to identify the most appropriate solution for them. Our solution might be feature based or cost based or indeed pivot on some other key requirements. We're also able to integrate products from other suppliers to really tailor the right solution.
